The original DOOM made me jump. I wonder how bad this will. (I have it, but my stupid XBOX original doesn't work.)
Sir I have played this and in less then five seconds  I was jumping left and right Fear. Compaired to Doom and Doom II it's 20x scarier. The only problem is after awhile you get the idea when the game will scare you next and isn't as scary. If you play this on your computer please DON'T use the light mod because it removes almost all the tension and it isn't so scary.

I just played it, and the darkness wasn't scary, just frustrating. Why can't I hold the pistol in my right hand and the flashlight in the left?

It's more of the bumps and atmosphere and darkness always added that atmosphere. I think it's either you're scared or not, I got scared and games rarely scare me Fear

Well, take FEAR for example. It was dark, but it was light enough to let me navigate fluidly, but not see enemies or other weird paranormal crap. DOOM 3, I swing and shoot madly in the hopes I hit something because apparently I'm being shot and I can't tell where from.

Well, I did get scared a couple of times in Metal Gear Solid 3. The part where you have to swim through the water full of aligators usaully scares me because it's hard to know where they are when they blend in so well with the water. When you swim up to the surface and get attacked without knowing where the aligator is, you can't help but jump and start shooting in every direction trying to find him. There was also the fight with The End but that's for another post.

Y'know, that's almost exactly the reaction I had trying to get through Condemned 2. Being in the dark isn't scary so much as annoying in that game.

Edit: Also, I dunno if one should really count jump scares as much in making a game scary if only for their propensity for decayed effect. The gators I'd count as a jump scare, at least if you found yourself unwarned about them, but (edit: mixed up boss names) The Sorrow's battle was honestly scary on a whole different level, coupled with the frustration of the (slight) fourth wall break at its end.

Cool note about The End. Save your game during battle, then either wait a week or set your system clock a week ahead. The End will die of old age.

You still have to get through all the mooks and cronies, though. But it's mind-blowing if it happens unintentionally.

I wouldnt necessarily call them the "scariest" games ever, but if you play Alan Wake or Resident Evil 5 at 1AM, they get really freaky! I was convinced something was going to come out of the walls and grab me or something! I was playing those games with my knife collection next to me, just in case lol

My dog (who sleeps next to my bed each night) was really restless that night. She kept making me just every five minutes

Strangely i really agree with alan wake, the game itself isnt really scare, but the atmosphere in it... oh my god considering the development team for the game was tiny you can tell they spent years polishing that game up because i was on the edge of my seat the entire time i was playing (Disclaimer i ONLY played the game past midnight as i always worked late when it came out).

The original silent hill used to freak me out a lot, but then again its one of the few games where limited visibility DOESNT annoy me enough to stop me playing!

Eternal Darkness, by far, was the freakiest game I have every played.

I mean, look for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFYlu_ZBo5U&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT120qvvf00&feature=related

i loved that game i almost was compelled to throw the game cube into a swimming pool   when it claimed to of crashed and to of wiped out my memory cards lol Tongue

rather then making a separate post for it

my favorites are fatal frame 2
silent hill 1-3 4 wasn't good 5 was ok and i hated shaterd memories

my first horror based games were  7th guest and phantasmagoria  (god that makes me feel old)
