The best I've had so far have to be a pair of high-range seinheiser ear buds, they cost a lot but the tonal range was just all there and you could listen to quiet music and not hear a jumbo jet go past  Grin.

What about you?

Super high-quality iPod-optimized metal earbuds, made hypnosis feasible in a movie theatre.
I went the dollar store method, but they sounded bad and died all the time. Usually in the left ear, for some reason.

'Dollar store' method here, only obviously not dollars.

I do have good sets of headphones for listening to music at home when I can't use my sound system though.

The buds say Shure. Don't know the actual make, but I skipped lunch for a month to get them even with an employee discount. Very good stuff.

For PC/PS3/Console gaming: AstroGaming MixAmp + Sennheiser PC-350 Headset
For travel: Shure SE530 Earbuds

Also retired Sennheiser PC-165 USB Headset (link is to the revision) and Steelseries 5H v2 USB - they still work well, just don't use them anymore.

Grado iGi In-Ear headphones, best headphones I've ever owned. The other ones were all the standard Ipod headphones mind you.
